Pre-flight

I never really know how to start these. So lets jump jump in..
For anyone new here, My name is Hank Holleman. I’m 27 and completely hooked with love for travel and adventure. I have been fortunate enough to travel and backpack all over the world. Most recently, I flew to Nepal with my dad and some of his friends to trek in the himalayas for the better part of a month and I was lucky enough to summit a 20,000ft peak named Lobuche. I recently graduated from a Technical welding program with the skill sets of a combination welder which I hope to get all my certifications in soon. But for the time being, I’m putting off starting my career and I’m jetting from Knoxville TN to Australia and New Zealand. I will be gone from May 1st to June 20th. I am able to make this trip because of a connecting with a company that I made. I am lucky enough that they are willing to put me up all while allowing me to explore their beautiful country. My itinirary is very open while I’m there with open schedules outside of what they have planed for me. All I have to do is make it to the airport when I need to and then not get robbed. I think I got this covered.

With that little intro out of the way let me just say that I started this blog days ago, but I am completing this first post from the gate of my first flight in atlanta. I wanted my first impression and what was going through my head be fresh and to be able to document it accordingly. I have another 2 hours or so before I take off and for now what’s going through my head is just a little bit of anxious and a little bit of jittery. My dad was nice enough to drive me the 3 hours to Atlanta today andI cant thank him enough for that. I’m  just getting picked up from the house earlier today made me a little sad. Saying goodbye to mom made me get choked up for sure. Even harder was walking away from my dad once I got out of the car and I think why is because the understanding that I was alone and on my own came crashing down all at once. I know I am gonna be ok. I know I prepared and planned for any and all possible “speed bumps” I might run into on this trip. But there is always gonna be a little bit of worry that hides in the back of anyone’s mind I think.

My first flight is from Atlanta to Los Angeles. Dad dropped me off at the airport at 4:30ish. My flight leaves here at 8:20. So I had plenty of time to walk around and just relax. From here on out I wont have much connection since I wont have a phone when I get to the other side of the world. So I Ill do what I can to keep this blog going strong when I can. If anyone would like to email me with Ideas or if you have friends I need to meet down under please reach out. Jhholleman@icloud.com I will be checking this email while I am traveling and will respond when I can. With that being said I’m gonna close this first post up with a quote that I read while on the Appalachian trail. I saw it painted inside shelters all the way to Maine and it still is one of my favorites.

Go everywhere, study everything, fear nothing..

Here’s to seeing the other side of the world and coming back with less fear.
And maybe a story or ten to tell.

Cheers,
Hank
